Theatrical Experience/Training:
In 1971 Roy was awarded a degree in Politics from the University of Wales and in 1997 a Certificate in the Art and Craft of Writing from Leicester University. After different jobs he ended up, where literary interests called, working for Leicestershire Libraries. A first attempt at creative writing took the form of poetry and he has a since had thirty poems published including, in 1999, a small collection by K.T. Publications of Stamford. But in the mid seventies Roy discovered an interest in theatre which immediately seeped into his blood. In 1979 he joined a Playwrights’ workshop at the Phoenix Theatre, Leicester, and through this group, a one act play and comedy sketches were performed at the Haymarket Studio Theatre. More success followed with comedy sketches on Central Television and two short plays broadcast on Radio Leicester. In the mid eighties he joined Leicester Playwrights and has been secretary for a number of years as well as co-editor of ‘Spotlight’ a local drama magazine associated with the group. His one act plays have been performed in festivals in London, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Scotland and have won playwriting competitions in London, Salford and Edinburgh and been runner up in Salford and Nottingham. Roy has also acted with a community theatre group in a pantomime, plays, revues and children’s theatre for schools and the Edinburgh Festival. His intention is to continue to go on workshops and courses to develop as a playwright and ambition is to simply get more plays written, performed and published.
